The Time I Climbed a Tree to See a Hall of Famer

My parents were confused when we arrived in Cooperstown on an August afternoon in 1978 and there was a HUGE crowd around in town. It turns out that my parents, while planning a 4-week long vacation from our home in Texas, had unknowingly planned our visit to Cooperstown on induction day.

I was only 9, so I don’t remember much about the day. However, I do remember my folks pointing out Roy Campanella, getting into his wheelchair. Most of all, I remember climbing up a tree near the back of the crowd with one my sisters so we could see the action on the stage where Eddie Matthews and a few others were being inducted.

My “stub” for this story is the scorecard from the 1978 Hall of Fame Game. I didn’t actually go to the game.
