Opening Day ’78- Reggie – Reggie – Reggie

The Yankees ended the 1977 season by winning the World Series for the 21st time. It was 15 years without one. Reggie stirred the drink with 3 Home Runs in game 6 to beat the Dodgers.

Opening day at Yankee Stadium of 1978 season the new candy bar was handout at the gates to each fan as they entered, the “Reggie Bar”. In the bottom of the 1st Reggie comes up to the plate and hit a Home Run off Wilbur Wood with 2 on, 1 out. So to salute this feat the 44,667 fans in attendance threw the candy bars on the field.

With the thousands of orange wrapped Reggie bar on the field the game stopped and the field crew with the help of some fans pick up everyone them. The Yankees when on to beat the White Sox 4 to 2 this day and win their 22th World Series in October.

This is also the year Bucky Dent hits the home run off Torrez in the 7th over the Green Monster with 2 on and 2 out to take the lead in the one game playoff against the Red Sox at the end season. What a great beginning of a great season.
