Kurt Weill

You know the musical arrangements of Kurt Weill if you can hum the notes to “Mack thekurt-weill-ticket-stub Knife” it is from the production of the “Threepenny Opera”. He fled Nazi Germany to France and then to Broadway.

His orchestrations span a bridge from the Weimar Republic Germany to the American jazz sound. The JLCO with Ute Lemper vocals brought Kurt Weill’s music to the NYC for three nights and it was an education of what this man left for us to hear.

Kurt was a socialist and the Threepenny Opera is a Marxist criticism of the capitalist world. JLCO with Ute Lemper preformed “Knife”, “Pirate Jenny”, and Kanonen Song from the Threepenny Opera, “Surabaya Johnny” (from Happy End), “Speak Low” (from One Touch of Venus), “My Ship” (from Lady in the Dark), and “September Song” (from Knickerbocker Holiday). You will also “Alabama Song” (from Mahagonny), the Doors didn’t write – Show Me The Next “Whiskey Bar”.
