George Brett Memories

Memories of George Brett….They weren’t moving up in the Standings nor Royals-George-Brett-Ticketheaded into playoffs or anything. In fact finished this season with an 87-74 record and had just won The World Series three years before, just being a small Midwestern City.

Filling many lonely nights of fans in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Half of Missouri the Royals were a low market team. As with the Mighty New York Yankees with just their Radio revenue pays for half of their million dollar Bonus Baby’s. But I took my young 7 & 8 year old sons to just see a ball Game and a Future Hall of Famer – George Brett – That Guy, Like Dick Enberg said after a “Terror” against the Toronto Blues Jays in the 1985 Playoffs, Brett lit up the Midwest on a cold October Night.

Kansas City staged an improbable comeback, Brett’s hitting he went 8 for 23 Brett-Pine-Tar-Batwith two doubles, three home runs, five RBIs, seven walks, and a .348 batting average. And he had lit up many, many nights. The Royals won that Game 1 To 0. against Milwaukee, When they played each other, Robin Yount And George Brett were fishing buddies. Brett just went 1 for 4 that game but was still heading for history.

He played his entire 21-year baseball career for the Kansas City Royals. Brett’s 3,154 career hit’s are the most by any third baseman in major league history. He picked the #5 after his hero Brooks Robinson, is Ranked 16th all-time. Brett is one of four players in MLB history to accumulate 3,000 hits, 300 home runs, and a career .300  batting average  (the others being Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Stan Musial). Brett was inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1999 on the first ballot along with Robin Yount and Nolan Ryan. He said about Nolan Ryan, “such an incredible fastball”.

The First time he faced Ryan, the batter before him had gotten hit in the ribs, the ball seemed to stick there for about a minute, then the player began to breath then then Brett went up against Ryan and took 3 straight strikes, he said that was good enough for him !!!.  (As he never did any Steriods nor any Performance Enhancing things) Brett had 4 brothers who played Professional Baseball. He was so clumsy as a kid, at one point the parents sitting at the table in El Segundo, California asked each other “What are we going to do about George?”

At his Hall of Fame induction speech he thanked his wife, then thanked his George-Brettbrothers, tearfully saying he just wanted to be as good as them – So I just took my kids on a warm Missouri night to see a very wonderful Great “Last of a Dying Breed Baseball Player”.

Brett’s Stats–He Also was Known for his Monumental Home runs against Catfish Hunter – 3 in a Royals Yankee Playoff game, and of course the pine Tar Bat game, then in 1980 another last inning Home Run against the great Goose Gossage of the Yankees, it hit the Third Tier at Yankee Stadium,  (Also in the 1985) World Series his famous Hemorrhoid problem, he missed 1 game, the press the next day asked him about  it, he just said “It’s all behind me now”. Also Brett really pushed to have his “Enemy” Goose Gossage get inducted into the Hall of Fame. It’s funny how two opponents can respect each other. Thank you for letting me share a lot of my Midwestern memories listening to the ball games, about a very aggressive old school baseball player.
