For my birthday we when out to dinner at Roberts with a window table and view of Central Park. After dinner we crossed Columbus Circle to see Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton Play the Blues in the Rose Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center at the Time Warner Building.
Taj Mahal open the evening with three solo songs, Hula Blues, Stagger Lee and Spooky Blues. Then the Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton with members of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s orchestra played, starting off with a fun song “Ice Cream, Ice Cream”. Then they when on to “Joe Turner’s Blues”, “I’m Not Rough”, “Careless Love” and others I can remember.
The big surprise of the night was Jazz arrangement by Wynton of Eric’s song “Layla”, it was biggest hit with the audience. To end the evening the brought back Taj Mahal to play with them a New Orleans Funeral March in two parts, first slow as the match to the graveyard and then more joyful way for after the funeral. The encore was “Corrine, Corrine,” with Taj Mahal again to end a evening that will unlikely be matched anytime soon. I thank the boys in the band for a great B-day evening.
