Elvis Presley made his final appearance in his hometown of Memphis, TN, in July of 1976, about a year before he died.
My boyfriend spent hours standing in line for tickets. I had a balcony seat in the Mid-South Coliseum (now facing demolition, sadly). I had my dad’s powerful binoculars so I could see Elvis really well. He looked bloated and ill, but still had a great voice, and clearly enjoyed performing in the city he loved, where it all began.
Also shown is a photo from the Memphis newspaper, taken at that concert. (courtesy University of Memphis Special Collections).
