I have worked way, way, way behind the scenes for Universal Pictures since 1987 – at their advertising agency – distributing and scheduling their television and radio commercials.
Every once in awhile I’d get a little perk, maybe a poster or a t-shirt from a film, a video or DVD here and there, and on a couple of occasions even a personal thank you for a job well done on a particularly ‘challenging’ campaign.
Imagine my surprise and delight when one day in November of 2000 I received a call from the head of the media & marketing department, inviting me to attend the premiere of ‘Dr. Suess’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas’! I got to walk the ‘green’ carpet at the Universal Amphitheater, met the dog that played Max and made my way to my seat in the balcony. We were in the front row, so we could look down over the railing and see all of the important people associated with the film including Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Jim Carrey and Jeffery Tambor.
Watching the film on the huge screen was very exciting, and at the end of the film – real snow fell over the audience ! After the screening, we were all invited to a reception where we saw many celebrities, and were each given a copy of the movie soundtrack.
Every Christmas, when I play the CD or watch the movie, I remember that once in a lifetime experience !
