The Chicago Cardinals Old School NFL
by Brule Laker
The Chicago Cardinals always lagged in popularity behind the Bears. For most of their existence, they played at Comiskey Park, the home of the White Sox. As South Siders, we rooted for the usually hapless Cardinals.
Less than 16,000 fans turned out on a beautiful late-November afternoon to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, led by OB Bobby Layne, take on the Cardinals. Our seats were in the right-field upper deck on the 50 yard line. Cardinals HB Ollie Matson returned the opening kick-off 101 yards, but the Steelers would score the go-ahead in the 4th quarter to win, 27-21.
This turned out to be the second-to-last Cardinals game at Comiskey Park. The following season, they played four at Soldier Field and two in Minneapolis before moving to St. Louis the following season.
