Army – Navy Game – 1973

by Gary S.

My cousin was a Midshipman at the United States Naval Academy and he invitedArmy-Navy_Game_Ticket-Stub my family to go to the Army vs. Navy Football in 1973 game. The game was held at the old JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, Pa.

That year the game ended in the worst lost that the Army Black Knights had in the 110 years history of the competition. The Navy Midshipmen went on to win 51-0. It wasn’t much of a game, but the parade was interesting.

JFK Stadium was an open air stadium, first open in 1925 and demo’d in 1992 for the new Wells Fargo Center. The stadium was condemned after a Dead concert in 1989, but still held concerts after that, it was a dump. The Academy that wins the game get a week vacation from school, so my cousin was happy.

The Army vs. Navy football game is true American classic event that has been moved to the back pages of the newspapers over the last 40 years or so. They can’t recruit the quality of players they had in the past and it seems  this game will remain as just other game to watch on a Saturday afternoon.

  1. I was at that game in 1973 in Phliiy at old JFK Stadium. I was 14 and It was a treat from my godmother as her and I took a local bus excursion trip to the game. There was nothing like it because I still recall the 2 acadamies marching onto the field. I recall the final 51-0 score, won by NAVY because each time they scored, the Navy shot off a cannon. It is a day filled with fond memeories because it was one of the last few days I got to spend with my aunt as she passed away a little over a year later from cancer.
