Show me how a golf course could me much tougher. I got there for round 2. Colin Montgomery was in the lead after the first day, but the real news was that this was Tiger’s return to golf after the passing of his father, everyone wanted to see how he’d handle things.
Well, “things” turned out to be skinny fairways, elevations, wind and rough and it was a day for duffers like me to watch and smile and the world’s best were brought to their knees.
Yeah, by Sunday there was tension, and there was pressure as Mickelson collapsed at the end, leading by 2 strokes with 3 to play he hit balls to the left and right and anywhere else till Jeff Ogilvy (pardon the spelling) took away the trophy with a 1 stroke win at 5 over. Hell, Phil even clanked one off a tree that bounced right back at him (now if you’ve ever done that it was like a lifetime golfers reprieve “Sure I can bend it around that tree”. – Sure you can.
So the legend of Phil, gifted and giving grew a little more that day.
