The wasn’t much pressure on the Knicks that night. If they won they’d become the first #8 seed to make the playoffs – if not they’d get another shot in a couple of days. So even though this was NY – it was mostly a free-roll.
I was there with an old friend, beers were pouring and we were surprised that the “old Knicks” seemed to be running the Pacers up and down the floor.
When they closed the Pacers out 90 – 82, NBA history was made, and they celebrated like crazy in the middle of the Garden floor. Good thing too, it was quite an accomplishment – and I don’t recall them beating San Antonio and in finals, so this was a good time to enjoy.
With Ewing in street clothes, the sum was truly greater than the total of the parts. Then Larry Johnson gets hurt, he’s toast in the 2nd half but they played hard and beat Reggie Miller (not hated as much as Michael – but still not the most popular man in Garden history).
They rode the back of Alan Houston, yes THAT Alan Houston whose pure shot was dropping throughout the 2nd half when they needed it most. The crowd hung out for a long time – cheering the team for it’s accomplishments, knowing that with several stars injured – we’d better soak in the moment. And we did.
